Mental fatigue after work is a familiar experience for people whose day depends on sustained attention, judgment, and problem solving. It is a useful question to investigate—not a diagnosis.
Short answer: sitting still does not mean the work is cognitively light. The task, context switching, correction friction, and time spent sustaining attention can change how demanding a workday feels.
When the workday feels heavier than it looks
A demanding computer day can be hard to explain from the outside. You may have been in the same chair, using the same keyboard, and finishing familiar kinds of tasks. Still, the last hour can feel much more expensive than the first.
That experience can come from the work itself: holding several pieces of a problem in mind, making decisions with incomplete information, reviewing details, switching between tools, or correcting an answer until it is right. A day with fewer visible interruptions can still demand sustained attention for longer.

Why can’t I focus at work when I am still at my desk?
Focus is not a single meter that stays constant throughout a day. The ability to keep working can be affected by the complexity of the task, the number of decisions, interruptions, recovery time, and how long you have been maintaining the same effort.
Controlled studies can show changes in subjective fatigue and sustained attention during long cognitive tasks. They cannot explain why one particular workday felt draining. TypeFuel treats that research as context for a question, not as a diagnosis or a claim that a keyboard signal reveals the cause.
This is also why “cognitive overload” is easy to misunderstand. It can be a useful phrase for a work situation that feels too demanding, but search results often use it in health, education, or clinical contexts. A careful workplace explanation should not turn the phrase into a symptom checklist or a promise that an app can tell you what is wrong.

If you want to understand your own work rhythm, the least invasive starting point is to observe timing summaries rather than content. A tool can look at changes in pace, pauses, and corrections without needing to know which words you wrote or which document was open.
